Forests play a vital role in delivering Wales’ environmental and climate ambitions, and a new long-distance trail is set to strengthen the connection between people, nature and woodland landscapes.

The Llwybr Coedwig Cymru Trail launches from Porthkerry Country Park, joining the Wales Coast Path before extending north to Pont Walby Viaduct, near Glynneath. The route passes through a diverse range of woodland landscapes across the Vale of Glamorgan and into the South Wales Valleys, offering a continuous journey from coastline to forest.

This inaugural section marks the beginning of a Wales‑wide trail that will, in time, connect forests across the country. Spanning just under 80km—equivalent to an almost 24‑hour walk—the route provides opportunities to experience some of Wales’ most distinctive and scenic woodland environments.

Llwybr Coedwig Cymru Trail

The Llwybr Coedwig Cymru Trail forms part of the National Forest for Wales, a Welsh Government programme delivered in partnership with Natural Resources Wales. The National Forest aims to strengthen biodiversity, build climate resilience and enhance access to nature, while making the most of Wales’ rich and varied natural landscapes.

By linking coastal views with shaded wooded valleys, the new trail supports sustainable outdoor recreation and encourages people to explore and engage with woodland environments in new ways. As the first stage of a developing national route, the Llwybr Coedwig Cymru Trail represents a significant step towards a connected forest network for Wales.
