Wrexham has been named as one of four places shortlisted to become UK City of Culture 2029. The city will compete with Blackpool, Milton Keynes and Sheffield for the prestigious title, with the winner due to be announced in early 2027.

If successful, Wrexham would become the first Welsh destination to hold the UK City of Culture title. Its campaign aims to build on the existing cultural offer and develop the area further as a creative and cultural destination. The official Wrecsam2029 campaign states that winning would support improvements to infrastructure, grassroots culture and creativity.

The city and surrounding county already bring together heritage, arts, industrial history and internationally recognised attractions, with its Visitor Trail which includes Chirk Castle and Garden, Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal and the newly opened Football Museum of Wales and Wrexham Museum.

The city has also attracted growing international attention in recent years. The City of Culture shortlist gives tour operators and travel trade planners another reason to consider Wrexham when developing future North Wales programmes and itineraries.

Wrexham and its surrounding attractions feature in many of our fact sheets and itineraries including Days out in and around Wrexham, Highlights of The North Wales Way, and Castles and stately homes in a week.
