Hop on Hop Off Tour: The best way to see Cardiff! Join us for a 50 minute guided open top bus trip. The tour includes Cardiff Castle, Techniquest and Millennium Stadium. This is a 'Hop-on, Hop-off' service, which allows you to use this tour as a convenient way to access all major highlights in Cardiff, where you'll hear all about the development of the City and see its fine Civic buildings, the new Bay area and the new Millennium Stadium. Day 1 You leave London and travel west to the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. Travel over the border into Wales. Your first stop in Wales is Hay on Wye, the ‘town of books’, nestled just to the north of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, and then through the heart of the Cambrian Mountains to the beautiful Elan Valley before arriving in the coastal town of Aberystwyth where you will spend the next 2 nights.

Day 2 Today you will explore the wonderful mountain scenery of Snowdonia National Park including the beautiful village of Beddgelert and its historic copper mine. From the mountains we travel to the sea and two wonderful castles at Criccieth and Harlech, taking a fascinating coastal route between the two. You will return to Aberystwyth in late afternoon. Your British travel guru was right, Wales is magical.

Wales towerDay 3 Leaving Aberystwyth we travel around the coast of Cardigan Bay to New Quay with a sandy harbor, whitewashed houses, and connections to Dylan Thomas. This town is one of the most picturesque and interesting little towns in Britain. What’s more, is you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins and whales. Turning inland again, we go looking for gold at the Dolaucothi mine, dating back to Roman times. Next we visit Castell Carreg Cennen (Carreg Cennen Castle) on the edge of the Black Mountains before we head for the coast again at Laugharne where Dylan Thomas wrote “Under Milk Wood”. From here it’s a short distance to Tenby, your base for 2 nights.

Day 4 Today is spent in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park birthplace of both the patron saint of Wales, St David, and the Tudor royal dynasty. The first stop will be the town of Pembroke itself with its fabulous castle, thyen we head for the tiny cathedral city of St Davids. In the afternoon the tour follows the coast to Strumble Head and on to the Presili Hills, source of the blue stones of Stonehenge. From here we return once more to Tenby.

Day 5 Leaving Tenby we travel to the outskirts of Cardiff for a visit to the outdoor National Museum of History at St Fagans. After a quick tour of modern Cardiff Bay we head back in time to the Roman Fortress at Caerleon. From here you leave Wales behind and cross back into England. You will then travel into Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, where you will learn the industrial history of Wales! You will visit the National Museum of Mining - Blaenavon Big Pit to embark on a 300 foot descent into the former colliery to experience the life of a working miner. You will then journey into the unique city of St Davids, smallest city in Britain, and spend some time in the magnificent Cathedral and the ruins of the medieval Bishops Castle next to it. Stop at the coastal harbour town of Aberaeron and visit Wales’ National Library in the bustling university town of Aberystwyth. Overnight: Richmond Hotel, Aberystwyth

Day 4 - Wednesday: Enchanted places Today embark on the Vale of Rheidol Steam Railway and enjoy the village of Devil’s Bridge in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains and take a walk around the mythical waterfalls here which are said to be the last place the Devil visited in Wales. This afternoon travel into North Wales stop at superbly located castles and sites on the way. You will stop in the unique Italianate village of Portmeirion. Enjoy the fantastic gardens, learn about its history and while away the afternoon in the quaint cafés and shops. For any fans of the series ‘The Prisoner’, this is where the show was filmed! Wales car tourDay 5 - Thursday: Essence of the North Today you will start by exploring the busy market town of Caernarfon – you will visit the imposing medieval Castle, built by Edward the 1st. After meeting the group in Cardiff this morning, we’ll set off in search of the Wales of old. Our first stop? St Fagans National Museum of History, Wales’ most popular heritage attraction. After learning a fact or two, we’ll move on to Caerleon, where we’ll explore the fascinating Roman Fortress and Baths – and find out more about life in second-century Britain. After that, we’ll journey onwards through the dramatic Welsh Valleys to Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, where a welcome dinner awaits us. (D)

DAY 2 BANNAU BRYCHEINIOG (BRECON BEACONS) – WYE VALLEY – BANNAU BRYCHEINIOG
This morning we’ll take things underground with a tour of the Big Pit National Coal Museum – a fascinating reminder of the coal industry’s importance to Welsh heritage. After returning to the daylight, we’ll travel onwards through the spellbinding Wye Valley en route to our next stop: the hauntingly beautiful ruins of Tintern Abbey. Take it from us – the abbey’s surroundings are just as beautiful as the building itself! Before we return to the hotel for the evening, there’s a treat in store: a wine-tasting session at an award-winning vineyard. (B)

DAY 3 BANNAU BRYCHEINIOG (BRECON BEACONS) – LLANGOLLEN – NORTH WALES
Today our journey will take us further north along the border regions of Mid Wales to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct: the longest and highest structure of its kind (and a UNESCO World Heritage Site). After enjoying an afternoon tea together at the charming Tu Hwnt I’r Bont Tearoom, we’ll move on to our hotel – where we’ll stay for the next two nights. (B)

DAY 4 NORTH WALES
After an eventful few days, today you’ll have plenty of free time to explore Conwy. What you do is up to you – but we recommend visiting the imposing Castell Conwy (Conwy Castle) and taking a look at the medieval town walls. This evening, a Welsh cultural experience is in store: prepare to witness a soul-stirring male voice choir performance. (B)

DAY 5 NORTH WALES – NANT GWRTHEYRN – PORTMEIRION
Today we’ll be whisked away to the village with the longest place name in Europe – Llanfair­pwllgwyngyll­gogery­chwyrn­drobwll­llan­tysilio­gogo­goch – before moving on to the fascinating Llanberis Slate Mine. After that, it’s onwards to the Welsh Language Heritage Centre in Nant Gwrtheyrn – where we’ll flex our language skills with a lesson in tongue-twisting Welsh pronunciation. There will be plenty of time to practise your new-found skills over dinner in Portmeirion tonight! (B,D)

DAY 6 PORTMEIRION – FFESTINIOG RAILWAY – PEMBROKESHIRE
Today we’ll take in the breathtaking landscapes of Snowdonia National Park in comfort and style as we enjoy a steam train ride along the historic Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway. We’ll then stop off at the home of Welsh poet Hedd Wyn before hitting the road to Pembrokeshire. (B,D)

DAY 7 PEMBROKESHIRE – CASTELL HENLLYS – PEMBROKESHIRE
The rugged landscape around Castell Henllys is known as ‘the Land of Magic and Enchantment’ – and today we’ll get to experience its otherworldly charm as we take a tour of the intriguing Iron Age site. After that, we’ll visit the National Coracle Centre – before donning our best outfits and meeting for one last dinner together. (B,D)

DAY 8 PEMBROKESHIRE – ST DAVID’S HEAD – CARDIFF
Back to Cardiff we go! From Pembrokeshire, we’ll make the scenic drive along Wales’ west coast, stopping off at St David’s Head (a dramatic headland that’s famous for its wildflowers). When we reach the Welsh capital, our tour will come to a close. (B)

We have carefully selected a mixture of comfortable 3/4/5 star country house/hotel accommodation perfect for those which are more comfortable with private bath. All have good boot and drying room facilities, tea and coffee makers and dining room service. Our daily social program includes an informal house party atmosphere, great for making new friends. You spend your whole stay in one property. The settings are varied, illustrating the surrounding beauty and diversity of the countryside.

Country House Based: You stay at one country house hotel for your entire stay. Most 1 week tours offer walks on 5 days during the week, departing at 9:30AM and spending about 5-7 hours walking, including stops. Wednesday is a free day, allowing you to do what you want, or to rest. The walks are categorized from short to long or from low to high level terrain, so there is something to suit every taste on each departure. The length of each days' walks depends on the level chosen, but can range from 2-12 miles or more. Our most popular British guided walking holidays offer you a choice of up to three lengths of walks each day, we call them Classic Walking Holidays. An easier walk and harder walk and one in between, perfect for those holidaying together with different walking tastes. day 1 LONDON/STONEHENGE/SALISBURY
Welcome to England. We’ll pick you up at Heathrow Airport and head to the ancient site of Stonehenge. Stay nearby in quaint Salisbury, known for its exquisite cathedral.
DAY 2 BATH/CARDIFF
Your exploration begins with a visit to the Roman Baths and time to see the Regency city favored by Jane Austen. Continue to the capital of Wales, a seaside city which is easily explored on foot. The museum here contains the largest collection of impressionist works outside of Paris. (B)
DAY 3 CARDIFF/SWANSEA GOWER EXCURSION
Travel along the south coast to Swansea, home to poet Dylan Thomas and Catherine Zeta-Jones See Swansea Bay with its golden sands, and Mumbles village with its Victorian Pier and lighthouse. The golden Gower Peninsula has an abundance of beaches and coves. See the Waterfront Museum. (B)
Wales tour DAY 4 BANNAU BRYCHEINIOG (BRECON BEACONS)/RUTHIN
Bannau Brycheiniog National Park is a stunning mountainous region, where the green hills yield the remains of old coal mines. Travel through mid-Wales to the half-timbered village of Ruthin, where you stay in a genuine castle. (B)
DAY 5 SNOWDONIA NORTH WALES
Pass Betws-y-Coed, set in the inspirational landscape of Snowdonia. Take the train in Blaenau Ffestiniog, the center of the slate industry in Wales. End your day in Conwy, known for its mighty castle . (B)
DAY 6 COTSWOLDS
Travel along the North Wales coast to the English borders. You visit Stratford-upon-Avon, home of the bard, and the site of the charming thatched house of his wife, Anne Hathaway. Drive along the winding lanes of the quaint Cotswolds, known for its cottage gardens and honey colored stone houses. (B)
DAY 7 COTSWOLDS
Spend your day haunting antique shops, pretty villages, and ancient architecture. See Bibury, the village once described by William Morris as 'the most beautiful village in the Cotswolds'. (B)
DAY 8 HEADING HOME
You bid your fond farewell to England as you travel to Heathrow Airport for your return flight home. Extensions in London are available. (B)
