Celebrating their heritage while embracing the future, the National Slate Museum will undergo a major transformation starting in November 2024. This redevelopment will revitalise the much-loved museum, ensuring that the historic buildings and globally significant collections are preserved for future generations to enjoy the incredible story of slate. To carry out these important renovations and updates safely, the museum will temporarily close from November 2024 until 2026. In 2025 they will be taking the museum on the road and, ‘popping up’ in local  attractions and community events. In 2026, it will reopen with a refreshed and enhanced museum experience.

The development will:

  • conserve and renovate the significant Grade 1 buildings and collections;
  • improve the visitor experience, access and interpretation at National Slate Museum;
  • create a hub for the UNESCO World Heritage Site;
  • upgrade spaces which will enable them to share more of Amgueddfa Cymru’s (National Museum’s) diverse collections;
  • place Environmental Sustainability at the heart of everything they do;
  • involve people and communities in telling the story;
  • enable more people from all backgrounds to learn, develop skills and be creative;
  • preserve and develop traditional skills related to the slate industry.
  • Create opportunities to explore the museum digitally
