Cardiff-based professional tourist guides, Lucy O’Donnell and Teleri Roberts, have announced the launch of two new Cardiff walking tours. Accredited Green Badge Guides trained to Federation of European Guides standards, Teleri and Lucy are members of WOTGA (Welsh Official Tourist Guides Association).
Their official ‘A Walking Tour of Cardiff Bay’ tour (dubbed locally ‘From Tiger Bay to Cardiff Bay’) provides a fascinating insight into the history of Cardiff Docks and its pivotal role in the global iron and coal industries. Tracing the emergence of the colourful Tiger Bay as one of the UK’s earliest example of a multicultural society, the story is brought up to date with the development of modern-day Cardiff Bay, one of Europe’s most ambitious and far-reaching regeneration and civil engineering projects.
The Heritage and Cultural Exchange/Tiger Bay and the World has provided photographs from their archive, to help illustrate the changes in Cardiff Bay. Trustees of the Butetown based charity trialled the tour and would highly recommend it.
A second tour is being finalised, again in association with accredited partners. Their official ‘A Walking Tour of Cardiff City’ tour (dubbed ‘Cardiff’s Avenues and Alleyways’) explores the nooks and crannies of Cardiff city centre, revealing its inner secrets and the city’s captivating history – from its origins as a modest Roman port, via the Norman influence and its prominent role at Elizabeth I court, to the untold wealth created during the entrepreneurial Victorian era when Cardiff dominated the world’s coal industry. Today, as one of Europe’s youngest capital cities, it represents a vibrant, dynamic and cosmopolitan centre, proud of its roots and rich history.
Teleri Roberts and Lucy O'Donnell
We each have over 30 years experience in the media, arts, tourism and education sectors – in business development and international communications – promoting Wales nationally and globally, and working for, amongst others, Welsh language broadcaster S4C, Welsh National Opera, Wales’ historic environment service Cadw, and Visit Wales. Cardiff has been our home throughout that time and it has been a joy seeing the city flourish and develop. We are proud of our home town and, through these new tours, look forward to introducing several more visitors to Cardiff’s many delights and exciting past."
