Seasonal Walks around Wales

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has chosen its top 10 autumn walks, which can also be enjoyed during any season.

Mary Galliers, NRW’s recreation marketing and tourism officer, said: “Our sites offer every kind of spectacular display that [Autumn] has to offer; the golds, reds and browns of the leaves still on the trees and the crackle underfoot of those that have already fallen. Then there are the purples and reds of moss on the bogs and moorlands and the rusts and yellows of grasslands, not to mention the unusual fungi and late flowering plants in sand dunes and around waterfalls”.

Amongst NRW’s top 10 autumn walks is the Elidir Trail in Pont Melin-fach near Ystradfellte. In the heart of Waterfall Country, the falls can be spectacular after heavy rain.

Along the trail, according to folklore, is the entrance to the fairy kingdom. But even if you don’t spot a fairy, you’ll see plenty of mosses, ferns and lichens along the way!

Trees from around the world line the path of the Forest Grand Discovery Trail in Coed y Brenin Forest Park near Dolgellau. Finding the name labels and fascinating fact signs is great fun for younger walkers, making it a good place to visit over half term.

The vast wetland at Cors Caron National Nature Reserve near Tregaron is a dramatic sight at any time of year but its colours really come into their own in the autumn.

The walks include shorter routes ideal for families with young children and there are several that are suitable for wheelchair users. Every trail is waymarked and takes you through either a woodland or a National Nature Reserve that is managed by Natural Resources Wales.
Some of the sites also have visitor centres and cafes where a warming cup of tea or an ice cold drink can be enjoyed.

The NRW’s top 10 autumn walks are:
Route 1: Cors Caron Walk, Cors Caron National Nature Reserve, Mid Wales
Route 2: Forest Garden Discovery Trail, Coed y Brenin Forest Park, North West Wales
