The World Alternative Games in Wales
The inaugural World Alternative Games were held in Llanwrtyd Wells, the smallest town in Britain from the 17th Aug - 2nd September, just after the Olympic Games. The objective was to promote Wales, Llanwrtyd Wells and the individual Events by organising fun, quirky and outdoor Events. Some 35 events in total took place, many of them, such as the Man versus Horse Marathon, the World Bog Snorkelling Champs, Chariot Racing and Bath Tubbing Champs take place in Llanwrtyd Wells annually, the remainder were hosted into the Games. Every competitor received a Corinthian Medal which stated that Taking Part is More Important than Winning. Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals were given to 1st 2nd and 3rd. The World Wife Carrying Champion came over from Finland to compete, and win!! The Swedish Bog Snorkelling Champ came over to swim, but he didn't win. Individual events such as worm charming, russian egg roulette and pooh sticks were very popular and the whole event surpassed all expectations and will now be held every 2 years.
