2013 Good Pub Guide Inn of the Year, The Felin Fach Griffin, was named the Pub List of the Year at the Wine List of the Year 2012 awards that took place in London on Monday 12th November, assuming the title from 2011 winner, its sister site, The Gurnard’s Head. The awards, in their third year, are organised by Imbibe magazine and sponsored by champagne house Louis Roederer.
The Felin Fach Griffin is a seven-bedroomed in near Brecon that has received a number of accolades this year: 2012 AA Wine Award for Wales; Inn of the Year and Wales Dining Pub of the Year in the 2013 Good Pub Guide; and a César award from the 2013 edition of the Good Hotel Guide where it was also named Welsh Inn of the Year and it also maintained its Michelin Bib Gourmand.
The wine list at The Felin Fach Griffin has about 100 predominantly European wines of which as many as 16 are available by the glass and carafe. All the wines are also for sale at retail prices. Everyone who works in the dining room or behind the bar receives training under the nationally recognised WSET courses, with chefs also encouraged to participate.
The Imbibe/Roederer awards are the only ones to judge the quality of wine lists at restaurants and pubs across the whole of the country. The judges of the original applications included many of the most respected personalities in the wine world, with the select panel for the final awards including wine writer, Hamish Anderson, and Master of Wine, Peter McCombie.
The judges said of the wine list: “It’s clear, easy to follow and there are some lovely interesting wines. Probably because The Felin Fach Griffin uses seven small merchants, its list is free from ubiquitous on-trade “big names”, and the by-the-glass wines have short, helpful tasting notes….. I’d be delighted if I walked into a pub and found a list like that.”
Edmund Inkin, said of the award: “We were excited when The Gurnard’s Head won this last year. For our teams to win it for a second year running is beyond belief. There are some great pubs out there finally paying proper attention to wine. Even to be considered in the same breath as them is flattering.”
Imbibe magazine is the leading publication for the Drinks industry in Britain and is published by Square Meal publications. Louis Roederer Champagne is the owner of wine estates in the South of France, California and Bordeaux as well as the maker of Cristal and other champagnes.
