Swansea to host 34th Celtic Media Festival

Swansea to host 34th Celtic Media Festival

Swansea Bay

Swansea has been chosen as the host city for a major international festival renowned for attracting some the biggest names in the broadcasting and film world.

The 34th annual Celtic Media Festival comes to Swansea in April 2013. The three day celebration of broadcasting and film talent will be held in The Marriot Hotel and various arts venues, and will showcase the best work from Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, The Republic of Ireland, Cornwall and Brittany. The festival's aim is to promote the unique languages and cultures of the Celtic regions on screen and in broadcasting.

The festival is expected to attract some big name guests and prestigious industry speakers to the city.

Previous high profile guests include actors Tilda Swinton, Rhys Ifans and Peter Mullan, film maker Ken Loach, screenwriter Jimmy McGovern and Doctor Who and Torchwood producer Russell T Davies.

Though the Celtic Media Festival is primarily for industry delegates, there will be a wider programme of local screenings, exhibitions, evening entertainment and celebrity interviews open to the public, including a series of master-classes and seminars for local students.

One of the highlights of the Celtic Media festival will be the presentation of The Bronze Torcs for Excellence. The awards celebrate the very best of film, television, radio and digital media to emerge from within the Celtic diaspora with Celtic languages featuring prominently across all categories. The winners will be selected by an international jury.

Dhomhnall Caimbeul, Chairman of the Celtic Media Festival comments:

“We’re very excited to bring the Celtic Media Festival to Swansea in 2013. Swansea is a city with a rich heritage and a particularly vibrant Welsh language community so we’re sure it’s the perfect host city for next year’s festival. Our festival attracts delegates from right across the Celtic regions and I’m sure they’ll enjoy exploring all that Swansea and South Wales has to offer.”
