Quarry Explorer Tour
Llechwedd Slate Caverns has released a video preview of a thrilling new off-road adventure which takes place in the mountains of Snowdonia. The extreme man-made landscape has never been seen by public.
The new Quarry Explorer Tour will allow members of the public to experience one of the most extreme landscapes in the UK for the very first time. Visitors will travel in open sided 4 x 4 military trucks to the top of Llechwedd’s formidable slate mountains which were largely created by the men and boys who dug the rock out of the mine in the 19th century.
The huge 1400ft mounds are made up of the spoils of the slate mine which lies beneath them. The mine underneath the slate mountains extends virtually all the way down to sea level.
Various new routes and roadways have been cut through the challenging terrain which covers an area of around 500 acres.
Visitors will travel in converted 4-tonne Leyland Daf military trucks, developed for use by the British Army and built to cope with the most challenging of terrains. They will learn about how the incredible summits were built – largely by hand – and hear some of the human stories that lie behind the extraordinary landscape.
Tours will run 7 days a week at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. To avoid disappointment please book in advance. Each tour is approx. one and a half hours and will, at times get bumpy trip over some challenging terrain.
Each truck seats up to 20 people. Minimum age of 5 years. Please enquire for information on group bookings and accessibility.
