Penarth is Pier of the Year 2014
Penarth’s Victorian pier has been named as the Pier of the Year 2014 by members of the National Piers Society. It received twice the number of votes as the pier which came in second place, Cromer. Third place was taken by another Welsh pier; Bangor.
By 2005 the Grade II listed building had become seriously run down and the Penarth Arts & Crafts Trust campaigned for its restoration.
The pier building was reopened in December 2013 after a £4 million refurbishment following a fundraising campaign and successful grant applications from the Heritage Lottery Fund, CADW, the Coastal Communities Fund and the Headley Trust.
Today the pier building hosts a gallery, a full time cinema, a café, observatory and a community workspace.
