Cardiff residents and visitors should have their sunglasses and sun cream at the ready as a brand new attraction to the Cardiff Festival will see Roald Dahl Plass being transformed into an urban beach.

Cardiff Bay Beach will open 27 July and run until 1 September.

The attraction will include live music and entertainment by local music and dance groups, while visitors can relax on deck chairs, with shaded areas under giant parasols. There will also be a child-friendly beach with a sand pit and shallow water play area as well as a mixture of traditional rides and stalls to bring the seaside to the city.

Cabinet Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Councillor Huw Thomas, said: “It’s important that new ideas are developed for the Cardiff Festival to keep it fresh and interesting. I’m sure the beach will be a fantastic new addition to the festival programme and will provide a great free day out for residents and visitors.

“Roald Dahl Plass was created to be used as an events space and we are delighted to have reached an agreement with organisers to host this free-to-access attraction at no cost to the Council. This will be a great place to enjoy a party atmosphere, hear some great live music, and hopefully get a suntan to boot."

For more energetic types the beach will have goal posts and volleyball nets for beach soccer and beach volleyball tournaments.

The build will begin after Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival (12-14 July) and will take over 300 tonnes of sand to create the sand pit area in Roald Dahl Plass. The privately financed attraction has already been successfully developed in other cities including Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Dublin, London, Birmingham, Nottingham and Liverpool.

Norman Sayer Managing Director of Sayers Amusements who are installing the beach said: “Sayers Amusements are thrilled to be providing the Cardiff Bay Beach event in Roald Dahl Plass this Summer as part of the Cardiff Festival.

“Having been involved in many of Cardiff’s major events over the years, we are sure this attraction will be a huge hit with residents and visitors of the City and will be an integral part of an unforgettable Summer in Cardiff"

Lucy Imms, First Choice Airports & Local Marketing Manager said, “First Choice is delighted to sponsor Cardiff Bay Beach, in partnership with Cardiff Airport. The beach is a great addition to the Cardiff Festival and I’m sure many families will enjoy visiting it this summer.”

As well as Cardiff Bay Beach there are over 20 other events taking place across the city this summer including the Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival, Cardiff Carnival, Joust! and much more.
