Gladstone's Library tops a poll of world wide ‘well being retreats’

Hawarden's very own Gladstone’s Library has topped a poll of world-wide travel destinations recommended as ‘well being’ retreats.

The Library was singled out in a readers’ travel tips competition in The Guardian newspaper alongside locations in Mexico, Cambodia, Indonesia, Europe and the UK.

The winning tip praised the library for being a ‘peaceful retreat’ that was ‘perfect for relaxing’ and paid tribute to its ‘inspiring, silent environment’.

Tom Hall, Editorial Director of Lonely Planet, was among the judges of the readers’ ‘Been there’ competition which asks people to recommend destinations according to a particular theme.

The winning review for ‘wellbeing retreats’ was submitted by regular visitor, Helen Colley, who comes to the library each year to study.

Louisa Yates, Director of Collections and Research at the library, said: “‘We’re delighted to have received this recognition and we’re particularly touched that it has come about from one of our visitors.

“As well as our hardworking staff, it’s the community of people that use the library that make us what we are. Helen’s nomination means a great deal to all of us here at Gladstone’s Library.”

The Library is Britain’s only Prime Ministerial library and the national memorial to William Gladstone.

It is home to a unique collection of more than 250,000 printed items and offers a comfortable, sociable and stimulating environment together with resources for creative study including renowned collections of theological, historical, cultural and political materials.

It is also home to 25 boutique-style bedrooms, its ‘Food for Thought’ bistro and conference facilities.
