Flying Scotsman to Visit Wales with the Cathedrals Express

Flying Scotsman

After more than 10 years away from the mainline, the world’s most famous locomotive, Flying Scotsman, which returned to action earlier this year, will visit South Wales twice in May 2017 hauling The Cathedrals Express.

On Friday 19 May The Cathedrals Express will leave Cardiff, diesel-hauled, on a trip to Hereford, Ludlow and Shrewsbury. Once the train arrives at Shrewsbury, after an hour for passengers to stretch their legs, the train will be joined by Flying Scotsman which will then head The Cathedrals Express back along the scenic route through the Welsh Marches to arrive in Cardiff mid-afternoon. Passengers in Pullman Style and Premier Dining will enjoy a Full Breakfast and a light lunch.

In the evening, passengers will step aboard The Cathedrals Express in Newport, sit back and relax in its elegantly restored 1950’s and 60’s carriages and take in the beautiful countryside as Flying Scotsman takes them along the Severn Estuary. They will be treated to a glimpse of the Severn Bridges and Chepstow Castle, before the train turns inland.

Flying Scotsman will head south, skirting the Cotswolds towards Bristol, where Flying Scotsman will be replaced by a diesel engine for the journey homeward bound through the Severn Tunnel, arriving back in Newport late evening. Passengers in Pullman Style Dining and Premier Dining will enjoy a 4 and 3 course dinner respectively, as they chug along one of the most beautiful routes in Southern Britain.

Steam Dreams Chairman Marcus Robertson is delighted to be giving passengers in Wales an opportunity to enjoy Flying Scotsman first hand: “Wherever we have been, Flying Scotsman has in every sense had more pulling power than any other steam loco that we have used, and this will be a great opportunity to see it perform on the Mainline and at the same time enjoy a fantastic experience of a lovely day out in our historic carriages that are between 50 and 60 years old.”

Passengers can travel in one of four classes, starting from £79 per person in Premium Standard where passengers are seated at tables of four, with crisp white tablecloths and complimentary tea and coffee at their seats, right up to Pullman Style Dining at £225 per person where they will enjoy the full dining experience.
