The UK’s most prestigious cycle sportive, the Dragon Ride, will return on Sunday 5 June 2016. Four epic routes will be available to choose from including the new 100k Macmillan 100, which is expected to be popular with riders making the trip to explore this cycling Mecca for the first time. Since it began 12 years ago the Dragon Ride has grown into a cycling institution, regularly attracting over 6,000 people to Port Talbot, South Wales to take on some of the most spectacular riding in the whole of the UK.
2016 will see the introduction of a brand new distance option, with the Macmillan 100 allowing riders who aren’t quite ready for something longer to taste the amazing Dragon Ride experience. The immensely popular Medio Fondo (153k) and Gran Fondo (226k) routes will return after rave reviews in 2015, whilst the 302k Dragon Devil is once again available for the bravest riders to attempt.
Among the many highlights of the Dragon Ride’s carefully planned routes are the chance to take on spectacular climbs such as Rhigos, Black Mountain and Devil’s Elbow. These are just a taste of the climbing cyclists will take on, with some ascents reaching gradients of 19%. In total Dragon Devil riders will climb over 3,800 metres, which is around half the height of Mount Everest. The mixture of jaw-dropping scenery and challenging riding has made the Dragon Ride a bucket list event for many riders.
