LAND OF SONG, a spectacular concert celebrating the music traditions of Wales and telling the nation’s story, will open WOMEX 13, Cardiff on 23 October this year.
Cerdd Cymru: Music Wales and Artistic Director Cerys Matthews announced some of the leading musicians from Wales selected to perform for a gathered audience of world music experts and music press from around the globe, and music fans from across Wales and the UK.
Announcing details of the performance Cerys has been masterminding for the past year, she said:
“The World Music Expo, WOMEX, (World Music’s equivalent to the Cannes Film Festival) is landing in and bedding down in the stadium-crowned, river-flowing, harmony singing city of Cardiff this year.
"It's a masterstroke bringing WOMEX to Wales in 2013 - as there is a palpable excitement and confidence following a great few months for sports - both Cardiff City and Swansea City now up in the Premiership, and this came after our Six Nations Gram Slam victory last year. Things are hotting up in the arts too, it’s RS Thomas' centenary this year, and our most recognised and beloved export, Dylan Thomas will see 2014 filled with operas, sculptures, canoe trips (yes you read right) and performances all dedicated to his memory, and Cardiff is a ready and eager host to the up coming musical feast of WOMEX.
"The Wales Millennium Centre declares ‘ In these stones horizons sing!' and its doors and arms will be thrown wide open to welcome visiting delegates and locals alike in a celebration of song, dance and poetry.
"Together we'll explore 30,000 years of Wales’ story and culture and enjoy the company of today's leading folk musicians, Cass Meurig, Gwenan Gibbard, D n A , Georgia Ruth , Patrick Rimes , Siân James , Robin Huw Bowen, Wales-India collaboration between Gwyneth Glyn and Tauseef Achtar, ‘Ghazalaw’, Twm Morys and more. Young clog dancers, ' Dawnswyr Bro Taf' will battle out it out with the multi-national dancers of Ballet Cymru over our iconic songs. We'll count goats, celebrate the humble saucepan, ramble over rocks and warm the auditorium ready for the powerful swell of those sweet old LAND OF SONG harmonies, bolstered by the quintessentially Welsh sounds of the Treorchy Male Voice Choir along with the local school choir of Mount Stuart primary.”
WOMEX is the most important international professional market of world music. This international fair brings together professionals from the worlds of folk, roots, ethnic and traditional music and also includes concerts, conferences and documentary films. The opening concert is a highly prized event, and each year nations compete to present the concert and showcase their music culture.
