A major event is being planned for October 2012, which will celebrate Cardiff’s status as one of the leading shopping destinations in the UK.

The first official Cardiff Fashion Week will see a programme of activities, entertainment and events from 22-28 October to mark the Welsh capital’s impressive retail offering for the fashion and beauty conscious.

Highlights of the week already confirmed and in the diary include everything from fashion shows and award ceremonies to student nights and live photoshoots.

Cardiff Fashion Week is being directed by Cardiff PR, marketing and events company Vibe.

Event director, Clare Birt, said: “An official fashion week for Cardiff is long overdue. The city has a phenomenal shopping and fashion product and is listed as the sixth best shopping destination in the UK.

We would like to thank all the members of the City Centre Retail Partnership for working alongside us over the last six months to pull the event together so that we already have an exemplary line up of events confirmed.“We look forward to making Cardiff Fashion Week an annual must-do event in the city’s calendar which will grow year on year.”

The team’s excitement about the potential of Cardiff Fashion Week is supported by statistics, which confirm the Welsh capital’s growing popularity as a shopping destination.

From 2009-2011 the number of visitors to the city centre grew 48 per cent from 26 million to 38 million; the number of visitors to Queen Street went up from 12 million to 16.5million; and the number of visitors to The Hayes jumped from three million to 7.5 million – a staggering 150 per cent.

Cardiff Council Executive Member for Sport, Culture and Leisure, Cllr Huw Thomas, said: “There is no doubt that Cardiff is a stylish city which provides a range of shopping options, from the unique Victorian Arcades, Markets and the introduction of the new St David’s shopping centre. In recent years Cardiff has continued to be named as one of the top places to shop in the UK, with the city currently placed at number six in Experian list. Hosting a Cardiff Fashion Week will help to boost the capitals already highly acclaimed shopping status and provide an added buzz to the vibrant city centre.”
