The Welsh Valleys are set to become the UK’s premium mountain biking destination with the opening of BikePark Wales earlier this month.
The new facility is the UK’s first large scale commercial bike park and will feature trails catering for all levels of ability from complete beginners to World Cup level DH racers.
Riders can pedal the 5km ascent or choose the minibus uplift for a speedier route to the summit. Here they will be rewarded with breathtaking views over Merthyr Tydfil and out to the Brecon Beacons before taking their tyres to the downhill tracks that promise a variety of fun, flows, technical twists and speed.
Unique to BikePark Wales is a dedicated full time trail crew who will maintain and extend trails ensuring consistent prime riding conditions and the continual development of new runs. BikePark Wales will open with an incredible 23 sections of trails, including a family trail and a pump track. A further 14 routes are planned over the next five years.
BikePark Wales adds to the already world-class mountain biking and cycling facilities in the Welsh Valleys at Afan Forest Park and Cwmcarn and positions Wales as a cycler’s paradise.
Economy Minister Edwina Hart said the bike park would be a major landmark for tourism in the area.
“BikePark Wales is an iconic development which will raise the profile of South Wales as a mountain biking and cycling destination. It is set to be the UK’s first ever large commercial mountain bike park which will hopefully attract around 100,000 visitors a year and have the capacity of hosting international events.”
