Theatr Mwldan and Cardigan Castle are delighted to announce that the multi-award winning band Bellowhead will headline the official Cardigan Castle Opening Concert on Saturday 25th July, with support from Wales’ own 9Bach.
Both Bellowhead and 9Bach have been nominated in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards which will take place at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on 22 April. Bellowhead - who have no less than 8 previous Folk Awards wins under their belt - are this year nominated for Best Band, whilst 9Bach are nominated for Best Album for their latest release Tincian. 9Bach will also be performing live at the Awards.
Widely praised for their stunning live shows and acknowledged as one of the best live acts in the UK, the mighty Bellowhead are a blistering 11-piece band fusing folk, funk, rock, world, jazz, music hall and classical music, and have placed themselves at the cutting edge of the contemporary music scene while harnessing all the power and mystery of English and European musical traditions.
In recent years, Bellowhead have enjoyed a meteoric rise to wide popularity and acclaim, wowing venue and festival audiences across the UK, Europe and North America, and their fifth and most recent album Revival hit the UK album charts at No.12. When you add their remarkable record five wins of Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, you know you’re in for a very special night out!
“One of the best live experiences available in the world today” Chris Evans, BBC Radio 2
The exquisite 6-piece 9Bach combine beautiful yet haunting female vocal melodies, sung over an almost ambient soundscape of guitar, bass, harp, harmonium and percussion. Their imaginative, innovative instrumentation frames the delicate translucency and subtle power of singer Lisa Jên's distinctive, expressive voice and unforgettable songs.
9Bach’s solid emotional impact is solidly rooted in the mountainous mining landscape of the band's native north Wales and their songs, sung in their mother tongue, tell of slaving quarry men, strong and stoic women, lost children, nature, family, and of love.
Their most recent album Tincian, released by Real World, has become an acclaimed hit, nominated for the prestigious Best Album prize at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2015. It perfectly demonstrated 9Bach’s crystalline sound and atmospheric, evocative and emotional hybrid of folk tradition and contemporary influences, bringing the sounds and ancient language of Wales out from a musty museum shelf and into the vibrant crossroads of the world's most engaging contemporary music.
