Cardiff City Football Club joined their near neighbours Swansea City in the Premier League in the 2013/2014 season.  The first time 2 Welsh clubs have been in the top tier of English football. Cardiff City now play in the Championship league.

  • The club was founded as Riverside AFC in 1899
  • Their first Football League match was a 0-0 draw against Clapton Orient on 30th August 1920
  • They are the only non-English club to have won the FA Cup - in 1927
  • They have been runners up in the FA Cup twice - 1924-25 & 2007-2008
  • In the 1966-67 season the reached the quarter finals of the European Cup Winners Cup. This was the furthest any non top division team had ever gone in European competition
  • After several years in the lower leagues, they gained promotion to Division 1 (now The Championship) in front of a packed Millennium Stadium in 2003
  • Their all-time leading goal scorer is the late Len Davies, the Welsh international who scored 148 goals in 146 appearances
  • Their old ground Ninian Park played host to themselves and a number of Wales international fixtures, including the Wales V Scotland World Cup qualifier in 1985, when Scotland Jock Stein collapsed and died
  • Highest attendance at Ninian Park was 57,893 v Arsenal on 22 April 1953
  • The new Cardiff City Stadium has a capacity of over 28,000
  • Highest attend the Cardiff City Stadium was 28,016 v Manchester United on 24 November 2013
  • "Do the Ayatollah" - Cardiff fans’ terrace ritual of tapping their hands on their head was, legend has it, inspired by the Ayatollah Khomeini’s funeral in 1989
  • The first South Wales Derby took place on 7th September 1912 at The Vetch Field in Swansea and ended in a 1-1 draw
